SHE SAYS...
After work on Wednesday August 22 2007, Jimmy picked
me up and told me we were going to the market to go shopping for
some paintings for the house. I couldn't understand why he wanted
to buy some painting that day specifically. Especially after I had
told him numerous times that I didn't think I could afford it at
this point in time since I had recently returned from my European
vacation. But he was very insistent so I gave in.
I
knew where the store was located and when we began walking in the
opposite direction of the store, I kept asking him where we were
going and he would/could not answer me. As we were walking around,
he stopped in front of a horse drawn carriage and asked if I’d
like to take a ride. I said yes. Though I will admit, I thought
this was a bit out of character for him. Here I was thinking that
either he did something really bad and wanted to make up for it
or he missed me A LOT while I was away on my vacation.
We took a beautiful 30 min drive through the scenic
back roads of downtown Ottawa. All of a sudden, we stopped behind
the Supreme Court and the driver said he was going to take a small
break. I thought that he was going to take a leak. As he left, Jimmy
sat across from me and seemed a bit nervous. At this point I began
to get suspicious! He had a speech written down but refused to read
it and forgot all his words! He then got down on one knee (tried
to since ther really wasn't a lot of room in the carriage) and presented
me with the beautiful ring. He thought I was going to cry but since
I was soooo excited for this wonderful moment to occur no tears
would come to my eyes!!! I'm sure I'll make up for it while I'm
walking down the aisle though!
Jimmy was rather sneaky, without me realizing it,
he had passed on my camera to the driver and while all this was
happening, the driver was busy taking a million and one photos of
us without me knowing until the very end! Such a great idea to have
the whole thing documented in photos I will be able to cherish for
my whole life!
We happily drank Champagne on our way back to our
car.
Oh and of course I said YES!.
HE SAYS...
So, the question remains to be answered to many
as to how the proposal took place. Well the planning all began shortly
before she was to leave on her European trip for 2 weeks. All was
postponed due to our incredible postal service being 1 day late
with the arrival of her ring. You are now asking yourself “a
postal service?” Yes, I said postal service. I ordered the
ring from an American jeweler (this is where those 3:30am infomercials
actually paid off!!!).
Ok, so I had contacted a man who runs a horse &
carriage company that I always see downtown and in the market, so
I got his number one day as he was seen going by. A few days later
I contacted him telling him I was about to propose to my girlfriend
and what I would like to do along with some of his suggestions.
So, it was now set. He was to be waiting at a certain street corner
in the Market at a certain time. Of course Jimena was under the
impression that we were going into the Market for a short walk and
to look at paintings for the house.
The date and time was August 22, 2007 at 5:25pm
and we were walking up George Street, “oh look Jimena, a horse
and carriage, do you want to go for a ride?” as I am looking
the driver in the eye, wink wink nudge nudge. We are now on our
way, it is misting out, she is a little cold, so she snuggles up
to me and I put my face into her hair. She thinks I am doing this
to snuggle her back, but it was due to the smell of the horse. Pantene
shampoo seems to smell better than horse crack.
We come to stop in behind the Supreme Court of Canada overlooking
the Ottawa River and the driver states he is going to take a break.
Jimena then looks at me as if to say, what is this guy’s problem?
But alas, that was my scheduled cue to do the deed, and as he was
getting out of the carriage, this was when I passed off the camera
to him to take pictures off in the background undetected by Jimena.
Now, for 1 full month I had 4 small lines written
that I was going to say to her for the proposal. I had them at my
desk at work in front of me in which I read each day to memorize
them, and I did have them memorized. But when it came down to saying
them to her when I needed to, do you think I could remember 1 word?
Nope! I was stumbling over my tongue and did not know what to say
at all, I do not even think I remembered her name at that time.
So I just did what anyone would have done at that time, I pulled
the ring out and just shoved it towards her and asked her to marry
me. Historically the guy should hear “YES” or “I
DO”. From what I remember, I believe she said, “PUT
IT ON MY FINGER”
It was at this time the driver cracked open a
bottle of champagne that I asked him to have ready for us.
